Two decades of participatory environmental stewardship
The Centre for Environmental Management and Participatory Development is an independent, non-profit, public-interest organisation that began its work in 2002 — with community-centric participatory environmental management at its core.

Our story
CEMPD was founded on a simple observation: environmental programmes imposed from outside rarely outlive their funding. Lasting change comes when the people who depend on a resource — a pond, a forest, a field — are the ones who study it, decide on it and defend it.
Over the years our work has evolved from participatory natural resource management into a broad sustainable-development mandate: water, sustainable agriculture, poverty alleviation, sanitation, health, nutrition, education, livelihoods, social development, research, advocacy and community participation.
Today we work with communities, students, schools, colleges, researchers, fellow NGOs, government agencies, CSR foundations, corporates, donors, volunteers, farmers, tourism stakeholders, media and citizens — because a sustainable earth needs every one of them.

Registered as a society
Registered under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act, 1961 — Registration No. SO107896 of 2001-2002.
2002
Field work begins
CEMPD starts its work with community-centric participatory environmental management in West Bengal.
2008

Registered under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act — FCRA Registration No. 147120808, dated 22.04.2008.
